Valor Brass was formed in the summer of 2004 by five friends and colleagues in the U.S. Marine Band in Washington, DC. The goal of the ensemble from the beginning was to play “landmark works” of the brass quintet repertoire in live recitals. Since our beginning, we have done just that, often touring to various parts of the U.S. and performing master classes at universities and schools around the nation. Some recital appearances have included: the Midwest Band and Orchestra Clinic, Texas Music Educators Association, International Trumpet Guild, the Juilliard School, University of Michigan, University of Illinois, New England Conservatory, Northwestern University, Southern Methodist University, and TAMU-Commerce, to name a few.
The quintet has also been active in commissioning new works. Among our recent commissions are Chase Sequence by composer James Stephenson, and For Then and Now by Larry Bitensky. In November of 2014 Valor Brass recorded their first album, following a successful Kickstarter campaign. The album will be released in May of 2015 and includes new commissions, arrangements, and time-tested works by James Stephenson, Tom Holtz, Viktor Ewald, Darius Milhaud, Claudio Monteverdi/Ray Mase, and Percy Grainger. The members of Valor Brass are: Michael Mergen and Matthew Harding (trumpets), Hilary Harding (French horn), Chris Clark (trombone), and Christopher Tiedeman (tuba and cimbasso).
